Learn The Language

Good advice for the novice poker player: Learn the rules and basic strategies of the game before you start to play.
Learning the language of the game is important as well. As without this basic knowledge, your novice status will be very obvious to the other players.

For an introduction to some basic online poker terms, read the list below. Note that the list provided is introductory and is by no means complete or comprehensive. For a complete list of terms, take a look at an online poker dictionary. Good poker dictionaries can now be found on the Internet.

Big Blind: This is an obligatory bet and is made by the person seated two seats to the left of the dealer (or one seat to the left of the small blind).
Button: This is a small plastic disk used to indicate who the dealer is during a particular round. The button is also sometimes called the “dealer button”.

Draw: The cards used by a player to complete his hand. When he takes more cards he draws a card.

Flop: Refers to the first three cards dealt by the dealer. The cards are placed face up

Outs: Outs are the cards remaining in the deck that could be of help to you. They provide you with an advantage over your rivals.

Position: The position refers to the seating of each player in reference to the dealer. Cards are dealt out in a clockwise manner beginning with the player seated immediately to the left of the dealer. Play commences in the same way.

Pot Odds: This is an important term to learn and yet it is one that is most often misunderstood by the players. The term refers to the amount of money that is already in the pot and the amount the player needs to put in the pot in order to continue.
