Poker Rules

With Poker’s long history, it should come as no surprise that there are so many variations of the game. Nevertheless, even though the rules may vary slightly between the different versions, the basic objective and structure for winning in the online poker games remain the same.

Overall, the objective in poker is to win the pot of money in the center of the table. This is money that gets collected from all the players at the table. The pot begins to fill up, even before the game commences, when the players ante up. A player cannot begin playing unless he pays the ante.

As the game proceeds and players bet on their hands, the amount of money in the pot grows larger. Typically, the ante is a fixed amount, but the amounts of the bets that follow are usually up to the players’ discretion. Sometimes, however bet limits are imposed that place a minimum and maximum limit on the amount of money that can be wagered.

To continue playing in the game, a player must either place a bet that matches or exceeds the bet of the previous player. If, on the other hand, a player believes that his hand isn’t strong enough to win, he can fold. When a player folds he takes himself out of the game and forfeits any money that he has already placed in the pot.

An online poker game begins with the dealer handing out the cards. Usually each player is dealt five cards, although this can vary depending on the game. The cards are dealt out in a clockwise manner and the first player to start is the person positioned immediately to the left of the dealer. This player can choose to bet or pass. If he chooses to pass, the choice goes to the next player and so on until one of the players places a bet. Once the first bet has been made, the remaining players have to either match the bet or raise it to stay in the game. If the bet is raised, the remaining players again either have to match it, raise it, or fold.

The game continues until there is only one player remaining or the round of betting has finished. If there is more than one player remaining in the game after the round of betting has finished they must compare their hands to see who holds the winning hand. If there are only two players remaining, they can continue to raise the pot until one of them decides to fold. The winner takes the pot of cash.

The winning hierarchy, from weakest to most powerful, is listed as follows: High Card, Pair, Two Pair, Three of a Kind, Straight, Flush, Full House, Four of a Kind, Straight Flush, Royal Flush.
